At the beginning of Virgin Net, I worked in the Community section, looking after live chat. This led to a strange schism in my thinking in that I became, and remain, immensely protective of the Users - hardly anyone actually gives a fuck about what happens to them as a result of what we do. It pains me, the lack of thought or consideration given to them - some of them, and by no means all of them obviously but some of them need real guidance.
Unfortunately, allied with this sense of responsibility came a strong sense of what is needed in chat rooms - "hosting" rather than blandly 'being there'. The users loved me. I'm a veritable legend amongst early V/net chat users.
This does not stop the fact that I HATE LIVE CHAT. It's the most inane, time wasting, hurtful, potentially harmful load of bollocks... Please be aware, potential chatters, that I speak as a Moderator, not a User. Jesus, they're so stupid some of them, and you have to be so nice all the time. It's enough to make you want to scream at them: "Get the hell off your computer and get a life".
But, unfortunately I am quite good at looking after the poor lost lambs. This is a cross I have to bear.
