Grip was the student newspaper for UMIST (er, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology). My then boyfriend, Paul, was the Editor while I wrote for it. I can't remember why I wrote for it, being from the Poly, but I think it had a lot to do with me just 'being around'. Paul was a very good, sharp Editor. We really turned the paper around while I was there. I think I suggested a change in style of design and the way the name of the paper looked. What did I write… my finest piece: an appreciation of the art of afternoon tea, and where the best place to go was. The argument was to enjoy such a louche and slack activity now, because when your degree had finished, they wouldn't give you any more overdraft to spend.
